He attended Florida State University and was part of the BFA Musical Theatre Program. During his sophomore year, he survived a near fatal car accident that left him in a coma; shortly after his recovery he began his acting career in Atlanta, Georgia. McCullough is openly gay and has directed and starred in several gay-themed productions in addition to his work on high-profile shows like Law & Order: SVU and CSI. In 2009, McCullough was party to some real-life crime stopping when a man attempted to steal his laptop on the New York City subway. McCullough, who is a trained boxer, successfully fought him off, even when the thief attempted to stab him with a kitchen knife; the New York City police arrested the thief shortly thereafter. Gerald McCullouch is currently dating U Mass college basketball star, Derrick Gordon. The couple met during a showing of the indie film, BearCity.
