Karen Malina White was born July 7, 1965, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She honed her craft at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts—cum laude—from Howard University, where she was crowned Miss Howard during her senior year. It was there she secured her first acting role, launching a career that has spanned over four decades.

Film & Breakthrough Roles

Her screen debut came in 1989 as Kaneesha Carter in “Lean on Me” alongside Morgan Freeman, for which she earned a Young Artist Award nomination. That role cemented her ability to command the screen with emotional depth.

Television Success

In the early ’90s, White joined “The Cosby Show” (1990–92) as Charmaine Brown and continued the role on “A Different World” (1992–93). She then transitioned to sitcom stardom as Nicolette Vandross on “Malcolm & Eddie” (1996–2000). White’s guest roles in hit shows have included “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”, “My So‑Called Life”, “Living Single”, “The Mentalist”, “How to Get Away with Murder”, “Young Sheldon”, and “Mom”.
